TOTO, the Japanese manufacturer of premium quality sanitary ware, has been designing and manufacturing top quality toilets for more than 100 years. Today, TOTO is the global industry leader and produces some of the most innovative products on the market. The company is driven by a truly Japanese vision of creating top quality products in the service of people and the environment.
The Drake 2-piece ADA toilet certainly reflects these values. Its elegant form and design and solid good looks would enhance any bathroom. Available in a range of understated colors that include bone, colonial white, cotton, ebony and Sedona beige, this is one of the most popular toilets in the TOTO range.
It is a two-piece unit with a high-profile close couple tank. The large chrome flush lever is side-mounted on the tank. This toilet has a universal design—the TOTO higher chair level design—which is more comfortable for taller people, the aging, and for those with disabilities. It is ADA-compliant. The large elongated bowl makes for a comfortable seat.
TOTO Drake Review
The bowl and tank are molded from vitreous china, which is durable and easy to clean. It has a standard 12” rough-in measured from the wall to the center of the drain pipe. The toilet is easy to install and comes with clear and specific instructions. If you have any DIY experience, you should be able to install this toilet yourself. The combined weight of the tank and bowl is just 92 pounds so you should be able to fit it without assistance.
This toilet boasts TOTO’s commercial grade G Max flushing technology. This is a gravity-fed system with a large 3-inch-wide flush valve that releases the water with considerable force. Gravity fed flushing systems are very effective and are a lot quieter than pressure assisted systems.
The fully glazed trap way has been computer designed for maximum cleaning power, eliminating the risk of clogging. The trap way is fully glazed to prevent dirt build-up and discoloration. It is also a lot more hygienic. The flush is assisted by siphon jet technology that thoroughly cleans the bowl with just 1.6 gallons per flush (GPF). The water hits the bowl through angled nozzles at a pressure of 8 PSI.
You will not receive a seat with this toilet unless you order one. TOTO’s SoftClose or bidet seat will fit this product perfectly. The Drake is covered by a one-year warranty but considering TOTO’s reputation for quality, it is unlikely that you will need it.
This is one of TOTO’s earliest toilet designs and one of its most popular. TOTO is known more for quality and innovative ideas than for cost-effective toilets. This toilet is, however, one of TOTO’s least expensive and it is really good value for money.
Being a two-piece toilet, it is easy to install, and it looks great. The high-profile tank and high elongated seat combine to give this piece classic style and elegance that will add a touch of class to your bathroom. The high-profile tank takes less room than many other models on the market.
The toilet is ADA-compliant so it can be used in public restrooms and in the workplace. What’s more, it is very comfortable. The elongated design is not only more comfortable but also more modern in appearance. Because ADA-compliant toilets require that the lever be on the approach side of the toilet, TOTO offers the Drake with both a left-hand and right-hand flush actuation lever.
The hero of this toilet is the flushing system. Granted it is not WaterSense compliant, but the combination of extra-large flush valve and fully glazed, computer-designed trap way does an excellent job of ensuring that the toilet flushes completely with no clogging every single time. No need to flush again. Some claim that the G Max flushing system is the most powerful flushing system available today. The valve is 125% bigger than most comparable models, allowing the water to drop with considerable force. The flush is also quiet and discreet, and the tank quickly refills in just 35 seconds.
Things to Know
Like most of TOTO’s products, the Drake has a limited one-year warranty. This is not the best warranty on offer but given TOTO’s reputation for great quality and its many years in the business, you can be pretty sure that you won’t have any problems with the product.
The toilet comes without a seat but you can team it with TOTO’s SoftClose seat, which has hinges that bring the seat down softly every time. No need to worry about the bang. It has standard locating holes so almost any seat will fit the Drake.
Alternatively, you can go for luxury and invest in TOTO’s washlet seat. It has five wash settings and an electrolyzed water system that will keep the toilet clean between flushes. It also has a warm air drier and deodorizing system. The water temperatures and seat temperature are adjustable. The remote control can be programmed for two people. The water wand is self-cleaning. The toilet opens and closes automatically, and it is illuminated by a night light.
The toilet is 30.5 inches in height from floor to tank top, and 28 inches from back to front, including the tank. The tank is 19.5 inches wide and the bowl 14 inches wide. The toilet seat is 18 inches high with the lid open. When closed, the lid will add another inch to the height.
The installation is easily accomplished as there are detailed instructions on how to install it. All components, including floor bolts and fill and flush valves, are included in the toilet kit. All you need to purchase is the ring, the bolts to attach the toilet to the drain, and the seat. It does not come with a water supply hose but you should be able to use the one from your current toilet.
For aesthetic reasons, the lid of the tank is slightly sloped and large, heavy items will slide down if stored here. Lighter items such as tissues will, however, stay in place.
Although a little more expensive, the American Standard Cadet 3 Right Height, a tall comfort height toilet, is a comparable toilet. Also molded from vitreous china, it does boast the EverClean antimicrobial surface. It also has a three-inch flush valve and a large trap way of a similar size to the Drake. It is ADA-compliant and is also a two-piece toilet that uses 1.6 GPF. It differs from the Drake in that American Standard cover this product with a more generous five-year warranty.
There is a reason why the Drake is one of the oldest and the most popular units of the TOTO range. Almost everyone who has purchased one is delighted with the product and many go on to replace other toilets in their homes with this product. It is comfortable and good looking, but best of all, it has an almighty flush that cleans the waste completely without ever clogging. At the price, this is one of the best toilets on the market offering great value for money.
TOTO makes some of the best toilets in the market, but many of them carry a big price tag. The Drake offers those with a less lucrative budget a chance to experience the quality, technology, and good looks of TOTO bathroom equipment.
